I've had some fun using AllenMar's Modified Ankit Database for a league, so I decided to run a league from 1901 to the present on the forums.
For those of you who don't know the twist on this database, here's a quick synopsis from the creator himself: "This is a modified copy of the Ankit DB for OOTP5. All players in DB have had their debut year changed to a random number from 1895-1994. Their birthday was changed accordingly so they debut at same age as in real life. Also the pitching, batting and fielding stats by year were changed to match debut and subsequent revised years. Since I wanted a FRESH start for league all stats for years prior to 1901 were removed from DB after year changes. By starting in 1901 you will have enough still active players for an initial draft of 35 rds for 16 teams. Every year after that there is an average of 118 players debuting, with least # 94 and highest 139. I'm importing the players in 1901, releasing all and holding a Fantasy Draft with the original 16 teams. I'm not going to follow history exactly. Instead I will use the following settings:

It must have been Jim Bowden himself drafting for the Reds if they took Pete Harnisch over Hank Aaron
![]() I like the fact that all teams are playing in the same stadium, so they generate 'pure' results, if you like Good stuff...the AL was one darn close (outside of Philly) division . Mentioning Philly, those Athletics will sure be ribbing their NL counterparts if they win it all this year while the National guys were winning (or should I say losing) at a .396 clip! |

1901 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
CHICAGO ORPHANS - Led by Frank Connaughton (.336, 3HR, 66 RBI, 29 SB) and Ben Ogilvie (.332, 6 HR, 69 RBI), the Orphans boasted the top offense with a Team Batting Average of .280. they also led the league with 37 HR. The Chicago staff is anchored by #1 overall draft pick, Will "Whoop" White (33-14, 1.93 ERA). PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS - The A's aren't too shabby on offense either. Mule Haas (.369, 67 RBI) won the AL batting title. Mike Hargrove (.334, 64 RBI) and Paul O'Neill (.304, 4 HR, 83 RBI) also provide some pop. Their staff is great from top to bottom with Frank Mountain (28-15, 2.28), Geoff Zahn (25-21, 2.43), and Dennis Eckersley (26-22, 2.83, 167 K). Unfortunately for Philadelphia fans, their ace, Mountain, ruptured his Elbow Ligament on 8/25/01 and is out for the season. PREDICTION - The A's won't be able to overcome the loss of Mountain. Chicago in 6. |

1901 WORLD SERIES
GAME 1 Chicago 5 - Philly 0 With Whoop White resting an extra day, Bob Porterfield pitched a complete gem, allowing 6 hits and no walks. The Orphans took the lead in the 1st when SS Frank Connaughton lofted a solo shot with 2 outs off Geoff Zahn. They never looked back. GAME 2 Chicago 3 - Philly 5 "Whoop" White may have needed one more day of rest as the A's evened the series at 1-1. White gave up 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings. Dennis Eckersley pitched a solid game for the Philly club, and provided some offense as well, going 2 for 2 with an RBI. Game 3 Philly 2 - Chicago 0 The A's steal Game 3 in 10 innings from the boys from the Windy City. Replacement starter Brian Moehler pitches a complete game shutout as the Orphans are unable to muster any offense. Ken Keltner goes 3 for 5 and knocks the winning run across in the top of the 10th for Philadelphia. GAME 4 Philly 5 - Chicago 1 The Orphans defense falls apart. 3 errors (2 by Shane Andrews) lead to 3 unearned runs as Geoff Zahn gets revenge for his Game 1 loss. Bruce Aven and Jorge Fabregas each knock in 2 for the A's. GAME 5 Philly 4 - Chicago 5 The Orphans barely stay alive, winning in the 12th. Whoop White pitches all 12 innings. Frank Connaughton is the hero as he knocks Delino DeShields in with a clutch single off of Dennis Eckersley. GAME 6 Chicago 10 - Philly 3 Back in Philly, the Orphans treat the A's to a can of Whoop Ass, knocking Brian Moehler around for 10 runs in 8 1/3 innings. Paul Hines knocks in 4 runs for Chicago, going 3 for 5 with 3 two-baggers. Game 7 Chicago 9 - Philly 3 The Orphans remain in high gear, easily taking the final game from the Philadelphia squad. Rightfielder Bill Robinson goes 4 for 5 with 1 HR and 4 RBI for Chicago. Geoff Zahn gets knocked out in the 4th inning and the Orphans never look back. 1901 CHAMPIONS - CHICAGO ORPHANS SERIES MVP - Paul Hines - .385 with 9 RBI Not exactly as I predicted...interestingly, the visiting team won 5 of 7 games. Les Lancaster as the 2nd pick...iinteresting guy. He was the manager of the Adirondack Lumberjacks (Independent Northern League) when I worked for them as the PA Announcer. Boy, I could tell you some stories...
I love the idea of this league. I didn't know this database existed...is there anything I should know before using it? |
